Talking is easy. Communicating is hard.

The very first telephone number I can remember is my family's from the 1950s: New Brighton 1787M. The phone was simplicity itself to use. I picked up the receiver and a nice disembodied lady somewhere said, "Number please", and I told her and she connected me. That was my first experience in communicating over the phone. It took me a long time to get accustomed to it.

When I was little, I liked the ideas of writing and of talking with people in person. I got those concepts right away. It was that Twilight Zone of voices with no faces attached to them that made me uneasy. Even then, I realized that we communicate with more than our words and voices.

Communication can be a thorny issue, whether it’s written or spoken aloud, business writing or memoir writing, body language or speech. I'm happy to say I've made great strides since the days of "Number please." I have been coaxing people to communicate in one form or another for more than 30 years, first in imagery as a photography instructor, and later in words by teaching fiction and memoir writing classes and conducting communication seminars.

After 25 years of running college classrooms, 20 plus years of publishing fiction and nonfiction stories, articles, and books, and 10 plus years of running my own speaking business, I'm qualified. And if you want to do a better job of getting your message out, you and I are qualified to work together to make that happen.

Here are the areas of expertise:

Memoir writing or personal history: Using my storytelling concepts, I can coach you in how to tell your life story or I can do it for you. Drill down to the buried memories, whether it's your first telephone, your first car, or your first computer.

Me and Aunt Bea's car, 1952

E-mail and presentation skills: In business, communication takes many forms. As an untrainer*, I'll help you or your staff with presenting effectively to groups, writing e-mails that get results, reading the silent signals of nonverbal communication, and working with colleagues from other cultures.

(* All of my training seminars are PowerPoint-free zones. It's just the audience, the content, and me.)

The Speech Doctor: I'll add clarity and humor to your speech or presentation in your own unique voice and style.

Personal tribute: tell the story of important people in your life as a video memoir production. Coming soon. Watch for details.

So get in touch and we'll work together to get your message out, whether it's business or personal.

You can even call me on the phone.

In this post, I soften my position on invented words, but I stand firm on sneezing.
